The Department of Art, Design, and Visual Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences at Boise State University invites applications for two Teaching Assistant Professor or Lecturer positions (appointments depending on qualifications) in the Graphic Design program to begin in August 2025. Boise State's NASAD-accredited program is the only BFA Graphic Design Degree in the state of Idaho, and primarily serves undergraduates within the Graphic Design program. The successful candidate will teach a maximum of 4 courses per semester at all levels within the Graphic Design program, with opportunities to develop electives relative to the candidate's interests.

Minimum qualifications:

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with students, faculty, staff, and

community from a variety of diverse backgrounds and media areas.

For appointment as an Assistant Teaching Professor, an MFA, MGD, MGXD, MDES, or equivalent terminal degree in communication design, visual communication, interaction design, or a related field of study is required, or a BFA plus 5+ years of professional experience is required. For appointment as a Lecturer, a Master's Degree or equivalent terminal degree is required. See policy 4250 for additional description and details.

Preferred qualifications:

For all appointed positions, teaching experience with a specialization in any of the following areas is preferred: user experience (UX), user interface design (UI), interactive media, package design, hand and/or hybrid processes, design research and history, critical theory, sustainable design, or experimental pedagogy.

Professional experience may look a variety of ways. Some examples may include-but are not limited to-the following:

In-House Design Roles: Working for a company or organization as a UX/UI/Graphic/Motion Designer or Art Director/Creative Director, creating branded materials, marketing collateral, or internal visuals.

Agency Experience: Collaborating on diverse client projects as a UX/UI/Graphic/Motion Designer or Art Director/Creative Director, often requiring fast-paced, creative problem-solving across industries.

Freelance/Contract Work: Managing projects independently, including client communication, budgeting, and delivering a comprehensive range of as a UX, UI, or graphic designs.

Entrepreneurial Projects: Building a portfolio through self-initiated or self-owned business projects.

Portfolio Requirements:

Professional Portfolio: 6+ project examples as a single PDF of no more than 25mb in size. Please no links to personal websites in lieu of PDF portfolio. For motion work, please include stills of the piece with a direct link to Vimeo/YouTube or other video hosting service.

Teaching Portfolio (if applicable): A single PDF no more than 25mb in size. Please include short project prompts/context with student work. Examples of curriculum may be included, but are not required.

Salary and Benefits:

Teaching Assistant Professor: $60,000

Lecturer: $46,000

Our standard faculty contract is a 9-month contract (unless otherwise noted) with pay and benefits spread over 12 months. This is a yearly, renewable contract, unless noted that the position is temporary. More information about faculty contract and work days is available here.
