This position supports our Corporate line of business and is based in Birmingham AL. Initially, this position will report to an office 3-4 days per week, and will have more hybrid work arrangement flexibility after training is completed.

For full consideration candidates should have 1-2 years tax and accounting experience.

We support our team members in their pursuit/maintenance of their CPA.

Job Summary:

The Tax Accountant I will primarily be responsible for the preparation of quarterly accounting journal entries and routine, non-income tax filings. The position will work with their supervisor to gain an understanding of GAAP and SAP related accounting for income taxes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

50% - Prepare various non-income tax returns, including but not limited to premium tax, property tax, sales/use tax, franchise tax, municipal tax, and excise tax filings and payments.

30% - Understand assigned accounts and General Ledger database structure. Extract General Ledger data for assigned area(s) and generate financial reports. Prepare journal entries and reconcile assigned accounts on a quarterly basis.

10% - Support various projects and duties as assigned, including:

  • Coordinate periodic tax payments with Treasury.
  • Collaborate with other Departments to gather information for various tax filings.
  • Policy and process development, documentation, and communication.
  • Research on regulations, laws, and industry trends.

Secondary Responsibilities:

5% - Assist internal and external auditors, state examiners, and taxing authorities, as applicable, by providing appropriate documentation and support when requested.

5% - Perform internal controls in compliance with established policies and procedures.

Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in accounting from an accredited institution.
  • CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years of tax compliance experience.
  • Tax accounting experience preferred.
  • Basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with database general ledger software preferred.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Outlook, Excel & Word.
  • Ability to work independently.

Position Salary Range$47,937.00 - $79,103.00The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
