Earlham College is seeking a Systems Administrator OR Associate Systems Administrator to join our team!
Summary:
Earlham College invites applications for a full-time
Systems Administrator or
Associate Systems Administrator, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications. This position will join our Infrastructure Services Team to ensure a secure, reliable, and efficient server environment. Earlham's IT infrastructure includes Linux and Windows systems, primarily running Debian, RHEL, and Windows Server, within a VMware virtualized environment.
The successful candidate will manage service requests, complete projects, and resolve technical issues, working collaboratively and independently. Candidates with varying experience levels are encouraged to apply, as we will tailor their responsibilities and the role title accordingly.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
General Duties:
- The Associate Systems Administrator provides assistance to senior infrastructure team members. Their tasks might include monitoring servers, following established procedures, and executing tasks under supervision.
- The Systems Administrator plays a central role in managing the server environment, working closely with the infrastructure team members. They lead the planning, implementation, and optimization of server infrastructure, valuing team input to guide decision-making and leverage diverse perspectives. While they hold final accountability, they prioritize collaboration to achieve the best outcomes for the environment.
Specific Duties (Applicable to Both Roles):
- Provide day-to-day support for system-related service requests.
- Collaborate on cross-departmental projects and initiatives.
- Contribute to the overall work of Information Technology Services, including participation in team meetings.
- Work with external vendors and consultants as necessary.
- Automate and integrate system processes through scripting or programming.
- Provide training to users on system and application services.
- Implement and apply patches and upgrades to ensure system security and performance.
- Additional duties as needed to support Earlham College.
Specific Duties (Associate Systems Administrator):
- Support with routine maintenance (e.g., software updates, patches, security fixes).
- Assist in troubleshooting issues that other team members have identified.
- Document processes, procedures, or changes as needed.
- Assist in deploying, configuring, and maintaining data center servers, operating systems, and applications.
- Assist in deploying, managing, patching, and monitoring identity and access management systems, including Microsoft 365.
Specific Duties (Systems Administrator):
- Leading team discussions to design and deploy server configurations and policies.
- Working with colleagues across campus to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues, drawing on collective expertise.
- Refining processes, policies, and documentation through team feedback and continuous improvement.
- Troubleshoot system and server issues promptly and effectively.
- Share on-call responsibilities for critical service outages.
- Architect and execute solutions.
- Deploy, configure, and maintain data center servers, operating systems, and applications.
- Oversight of deployment, configuration, management patching, and monitoring identity and access management systems, including Microsoft 365.
- As a member of the Earlham College faculty, participate in the work of the faculty by attending faculty meetings, and, if nominated, serve on faculty committees.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications (Applicable to Both Roles):
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong technical experience with identity and access management systems.
- Proficiency in Linux system administration (level of experience will determine role title).
- Basic network administration skills.
- Ability to understand and use system-based scripts.
- Experience creating and maintaining a secure, reliable, and robust production server environment.
- Strong documentation and problem-solving skills.
- Complete projects, and respond to service requests in a timely manner.
- Ability to take on the challenge of unfamiliar tasks.
- Actively seek input from relevant sources to make timely and well- informed decisions.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Additional Required Qualifications (for Systems Administrator):
- Three or more years of Linux system administration experience.
- Experience with automation and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible).
- Proficiency with VMware and Microsoft 365 administration.
- Ability to write and manage system-based scripts.
- Experience configuring and managing Directory Services (OpenLDAP or Active Directory).
- Expertise in RHEL, Debian, and Windows Server environments.
