College/Department Overview

The College of Education and Professional Studies currently has one hundred full-time and over one hundred part-time faculty organized in seven departments. The college offers twenty-three undergraduate majors and twenty-eight graduate majors. All teacher education programs are CAEP accredited.

The Donna Nigh Advanced Professional and Special Services Department resides within the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma. The six programs within the DNAPSS department are Special Education, Educational Leadership, School Counseling, Library Media, Speech Language Pathology, and Reading. All the programs within DNAPSS teach in a combination of face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments to meet the diverse needs of our students.

Position Overview

Teaches, advises, and mentors students; evaluates student performance; and maintains program and student records in accordance with university policies. A successful candidate will adhere to the educational philosophy of the university; work in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers; participate in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty; serve on department, college, and university committees as requested; prepare program reports as requested; and engage in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities as defined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook. The faculty member is expected to support & facilitate the department/school/college academic and university missions, visions, & long-term goals.

Assistant Professors must have completed all requirements in a doctoral program at an accredited or internationally recognized institution. This position is a full-time, tenure-track position.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Duties include teaching face-to-face/hybrid/online undergraduate and graduate courses in Special Education, engaging in scholarly activities, and serving on department, college, and university committees and related initiatives. The successful candidate will evaluate student performance and maintain department records in accordance with university and accreditation policies. Additional duties include supervising student interns and practicum students and completing reports in accordance with university and accreditation policies.

Qualifications/Experience Required

The successful candidate should have a doctorate degree in Special Education, or a closely related field awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval). **NOTE** If the doctorate is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position rank will change to TT-Instructor.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Preference will be given to candidates with professional experience and expertise in P-12 special education and to those with higher education teaching experience and demonstrated excellence in online and face-to-face teaching and course development.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

The candidate must demonstrate commitment to teaching excellence in pedagogy/transformative learning, professional development, scholarly inquiry, and service. Instructional assignments may include but are not limited to undergraduate and graduate courses in Foundations of Special Education (SPED), SPED Curriculum Development, SPED Assessment, Autism Spectrum, and Early Intervention. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively in planning, completing projects, and collaborating with committees involving campus and community stakeholders.
