Job Summary

Under limited supervision, operates fabricating machines, such as cutoff saws, rolls, brakes, presses, forming machines, and punch machines that cut, shape, and bend metal plates and sheets. Lays out, fabricates, assembles products, utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Reads and interprets blueprints to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products.
  • Selects gauge and type of sheet metal, according to product specifications; sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template.
  • Lays out and marks dimensions and reference lines on material, using scribers, dividers, squares, and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to develop and trace patterns of product or parts or using templates.
  • Works with technical drawings. Interprets and calculates dimension and transfers information into set-ups.
  • Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers, to cut, bend, block and form, or straighten materials; selects positions and secures dies, blades, cutters, and fixtures onto machine, using rule, square, shims, templates, hand tools, and built-in gauges.
  • May rivet and spot weld work pieces, tend machines that fabricate or operate plasma arc cutter to cut patterns from sheet metal.
  • Adjusts controls to set and regulate machining factors, such as pressure and depth of ram stroke, adjustment rolls, blade angle, and machine speed; trims, files, grinds, deburrs, buffs, and smoothes surfaces, using hand tools and portable power tools including file, hand grinder, wire brush, and/or vibre bowl. Welds, rivets, clips, using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Inspects assemblies in supportive framework according to blueprints, using hand tools, power tools, and lifting and handling devices. Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, scales, dial indicators, gauges, and micrometers.
  • Works out problems on a general instruction basis for various types of mechanical parts, packages or assemblies.
  • Handles basic jobs directly from work orders without the requirement for detailed production drawings.
  • Assists in designs of prototype models working with an absolute minimum of drawings. Works primarily from verbal discussions with the project engineer.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on machines as scheduled and required for TPM.
  • Works individually and as a team to develop and implement quality and efficiency improvements.
  • Maintains quality requirements in sheet metal area and ensures that work meets or exceeds these requirements.
