The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our North Liberty Campus. The new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty Campus will open in the Spring of 2025. This 469,000 square foot facility will be home to UI Health Care's nationally recognized Orthopedics service line, offering comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible care across the outpatient, inpatient, and surgical venues. These state-of-the-art clinical facilities will also include a full-service community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, retail pharmacy, and emergency department as well as an array of support services. The facility has been designed to support a superior patient and staff experience; excellence across our patient care, teaching, and research missions; convenient access to services; and engaging community partnerships. The Senior Pharmacy Technician, under general supervision of a pharmacist, coordinates daily functions of pharmacy technicians and performs technical activities to meet service needs of the pharmacy department. They will assist with ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, quality assurance activities, inventory management, new policy and procedure development and implementation, training staff, technician scheduling, and other duties as assigned. The Senior Pharmacy Technician will maintain competency and perform all duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician.

Position Responsibilities:

1) Coordinate daily technical functions for the pharmacy department.

  • Provide functional oversight of pharmacy technicians and student pharmacy technicians.
  • Reassign technician duties based on workload.
  • Provide feedback to Pharmacy Operations Supervisor regarding technician performance.
  • Work on-line performing all required technician duties.
2) Assist with the onboarding of new staff.
  • Participate in applicant interviews.
  • Assist with new technician orientation including preparation of training materials and schedules, administration of competencies, and documentation of training checklists and competencies.
  • Provide feedback regarding competency.
3) Assist with preparation and maintenance of the aseptic technique training program.
  • Maintain a current training manual that reflects policy and procedures related to aseptic technique.
  • Responsible for initial aseptic technique training of new pharmacists and technicians.
  • Assist with monitoring of aseptic technique competencies.
  • Collect and evaluate data related to aseptic technique competence of pharmacists and technicians.
  • Collect and evaluate data related to compounding cleaning activities.
4) Participate in inventory management activities.
  • Coordinate inventory activities including cycle counts, monthly inventories, and annual inventory.
  • Assist with the ordering of supplies and medications.
  • Consistently monitor usage patterns and adjust PAR levels accordingly.
  • Maintain an inventory that will minimize waste.
  • Identify strategies to reduce costs.
  • Ensure completion of audits.
5) Assist with the coordination of resources related to drug shortages and recalls.
  • Communicate necessary information regarding drug shortages and recalls with staff.
  • Facilitate implementation of new compounding procedures if necessary (i.e. new forms, etc.).
  • Optimize inventory for medications in short supply.
6) Monitors performance and maintenance of pharmacy technology and equipment.
  • Monitor operation of equipment and automation. Troubleshoots issues and performs minor adjustments on equipment or initiates requests for repair or replacement.
  • Assure equipment maintenance is complete and documented.
  • Assist with evaluation and implementation of new technology and products.
7) Participates in cash collection and reconciliation activities.
  • Assure that patient or third-party pricing and billing errors, issues, and complaints are resolved. Acts as an advisor for any questions regarding communication with patient.
  • Coordinate the identification and reconciliation of third-party rejections.
  • Assists with cash register activities and maintenance.
8) Participate in department activities.
  • Participate in department huddles.
  • Assist with implementation of new workflows, services, and equipment.
  • Assist with evaluation and implementation of new policy and procedures.
  • Maintain all required records.
  • Acts as a positive role model. Communicates with clear, positive verbal and written messages to patients, individuals within the department, and other departments. Fosters teamwork by encouraging and assisting others.
9) Assists with scheduling.
  • Participates in schedule preparation in coordination with the Pharmacy Operations Supervisor.
10) Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience
    • Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
    • Four years of experience as a pharmacy technician.

  • Desired Qualifications:
    • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations.
    • Experience with inventory management activities.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks in time sensitive situations.
    • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs.
    • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.
    • Experience working in a team environment.
    • Previous work experience in healthcare.
