The Clinical Nurse Educator acts as an Educator, Facilitator, Academic Liaison, Change Agent, Team Member, Innovator, Consultant, Leader, Communicator, Collaborator, Advisor, and Mentor to support the provision of high-quality care.

1. Collects data and information related to educational needs using valid and reliable methods
a. Uses organizational strategic plan and goals to determine educational priorities
b. Plans educational activities to help assigned clinical area(s) meet or exceed quality goals
c. Supports a practice culture in which all employees are aware of and engaged in the process of meeting unit and organizational goals
d. Assesses learner characteristics, including learning styles and learning needs for program development

2. Analyzes issues, trends, and supporting data to determine educational needs.
. Anticipates and forecasts trends
a. Validates needs with the nurse, leader(s), and other educators or disciplines as appropriate

3. Identifies desired educational outcomes.
. Involves learners and key stakeholders in formulating desired outcomes
a. Develops context-specific outcomes based on organization, stakeholders', and learners' values and goals, as well as current evidence and regulations
b. Documents outcomes, including those that demonstrate learning and program impact

4. Collaborates in the development, implementation and evaluation of plans.
. Consistently uses appropriate planning methodologies when implementing, facilitating, and evaluating various programs and projects
a. Plans and implements programs and projects, using innovation and creativity

5. Coordinates educational initiatives and activities.
. Coordinates clinical, financial, technical, educational, and other appropriate resources and systems to implement the activities
a. Effectively delivers educational content one-on-one, in small groups, or in formal presentation settings
b. Oversees the nursing orientation process on assigned unit(s)
c. Oversees the development of preceptors and resources nurses on assigned unit(s)

6. Employs strategies and techniques to promote positive learning and practice environments.
. Implements a variety of teaching strategies tailored to the learners' characteristics, learning needs, cultural perspectives, and outcome objectives
a. Facilitates critical thinking
b. Effectively and supportively uses just-in-time teaching

7. Provides consultation to influence plans, and enhance the abilities of others, and affect change.
. Functions as a change agent and leader
a. Implements motivational strategies at the individual, group, program, and organizational levels
b. Promotes a practice culture in which innovation and appropriate risk taking are promoted and expected

8. Evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.
. Selects valid, reliable, and relevant methods and instruments to measure processes and outcomes
a. Involves learners and stakeholders in the evaluation process
b. Creates opportunities for feedback and evaluation of the effectiveness of educational content, materials, techniques, strategies, and learning environment
c. Revises programs and teaching based on evaluation data

9. Uses best educational practices to optimize staff and patient outcomes
. Effectively applies nursing and learning theoretical and conceptual foundations
a. Supports the involvement of individuals in their own professional development and learning processes
b. Acts as both a teacher and a facilitator

10. Maintains current knowledge and competency in nursing and professional development practice
. Acquires needed knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area(s), practice setting(s), role(s), and learner needs
a. Seeks experiences to develop, maintain, and improve competence in nursing professional development
b. Models expert practice as educator and nurse

11. Evaluates his or her own practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, and relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.
. Participates in meaningful, systematic peer review by effectively giving and receiving timely, honest, and relevant feedback
a. Actively and regularly solicits feedback regarding his or her own practice from learners, colleagues, and key stakeholders

Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
• 10,000 hours, or 5 years RN work experience in relevant clinical area

Experience Preferred/Desired
• Five years RN in acute care hospital setting.

Education Minimum Required
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (or related field), with satisfactory progress toward MSN or higher.

Education Preferred/Desired
• Master's Degree in Nursing Education or related field

Special Skills Minimum Required
• CPR

Special Skills Preferred/Desired
• NPD Certification

Licensure and/or Certifications Required
• RN
