The Department of Pediatrics is searching for an Associate Chair of Academic Affairs at Cincinnati Children's. These responsibilities would initially involve 40% effort with the remaining 60% covered by the individual's clinical time or external funds.

The roles and responsibilities below focus on the functions of the Associate Chair. Clinical care /research responsibilities will align with expectations of a typical faculty appointment.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Associate Chair:
  • Key responsibilities include providing leadership, project management, training delivery, facilitation, and administration in the following areas:
  • Oversight of Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure (RPT) policies and procedures for Department of Pediatrics, under the direction of the Chair: create policies and procedures documents, pre-review RPT requests, educate and advise faculty around RPT and dossier preparation, lead revision of RPT criteria (per University of Cincinnati College of Medicine guidelines), voting on new guidelines, review length of reappointment requests, facilitate voting processes for RPT committee members, liaison with UC College of Medicine Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs
  • Promotion of faculty professionalism and leadership through development of expectations and guidelines and manage academic misconduct, conflict of interest and conflict of commitment
  • Supervision of the annual faculty evaluation process and faculty recruitment and retention in the Department of Pediatrics
  • Collaboration with the Associate Chair of Faculty Development and Diversity/Director of the Office of Academic Affairs and Career Development to facilitate communication with faculty in the Department of Pediatrics about RPT, scientific/academic misconduct, faculty evaluation, and conflict of interest and commitment through OAACD publications, handbooks, intranet/extranet sites, presentations, and social media. Assist in the OAACD in program development and implementation and with aligning RPT with faculty development goals including those related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Building regional and national stature in academic affairs by engaging in relevant organizations and publishing results to help scale effective programs
  • Creation of a collaborative, diverse and inclusive community in which faculty members view each other as partners in achieving the strategic objectives of the institution

Cincinnati Children's comprises the Department of Pediatrics and the departments of Pediatric Surgery, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Pathology, and Psychiatry of the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine. Within these departments, faculty at Cincinnati Children's are creating novel clinical and scientific breakthroughs to transform outcomes for children, training future clinicians and investigators, and participating in national and global partnerships.

Dating back to 1926, the academic affiliation with the Department of Pediatrics at the UC College of Medicine has resulted in numerous joint endeavors, including the performance of basic and clinical research, collaboration in the care of patients, cooperation in education, and training of medical students, doctorial students, residents and fellows, and arrangement for the join use of facilities and equipment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • MD, DO, PhD or equivalent degree (clinical providers will need appropriate board certification)
  • Five years of progressive management/leadership experience in a complex medical center
Preferred:

  • Senior faculty member with experience in clinical work, research, education, advocacy, service, and mentoring to understand the broad range of activities faculty are involved in, and what is needed for success
  • Experience and expertise in reappointment, promotion, and tenure processes; faculty recruitment and retention, research/academic misconduct, and conflict of interest and commitment
  • Experience with extramural research. Experience with international collaborations and industry research would be helpful but not required.
  • Leadership skills and capabilities essential for success in leading academic affairs. National leadership and participation in committees preferred (e.g. national academic professional organizations, NIH study sections)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with leaders and faculty across the health systems and affiliated academic units
