The Office of Student Life staff and multiple departments aim to help students navigate their time at IU, providing the tools they need to be successful in school and after graduation. Student Life Marketing is responsible for strategizing, creating, implementing, and assessing the marketing and communications efforts for the Office of Student Life and the 26 departments within it. This team creates integrated marketing communications through digital and print campaigns, photography, video, writing, social media, and more.
Job Summary
We are seeking a creative and professional photographer to visually capture and share the story of Student Life. This role entails producing high-quality photos and videos that support our marketing and communication efforts, while also ensuring alignment with Indiana University's branding guidelines. The work produced in this role will be featured across multiple platforms, contributing to the dynamic representation of our student community.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Capture the vibrancy of the Office of Student Life by serving as the official photographer for events, activities, and campus life for marketing and communication efforts.
- Take professional portraits of staff and student leaders, helping showcase our team.
- Edit and distribute professional-level photographs in a timely manner to colleagues and clients,
- Ensure proper naming, keywording, and archiving procedures are in place for each project.
- Create engaging videos that highlight and promote our programs, events, and services, both in vertical and horizontal formats.
- Work closely with partners to strategize, storyboard, shoot, and edit videos for the appropriate platforms based on desired outcome and audience.
- Lead a talented team of 4-6 student multimedia photographers, providing guidance on both photo and video projects; Work with the team to plan, delegate event coverage, and ensure the team produces polished, professional-quality content.
- Edit and format events and other projects are video recorded and edited for seamless sharing with colleagues and target audiences on web and mobile platforms.
- Curate and manage a well-organized photo and video library, making resources easily accessible to colleagues.
- Provide eye-catching photos for use in offices, spaces, and rooms throughout campus.
- Other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Identifies basic, complex, special, and/or urgent photography projects for use in a variety of marketing and communications needs; sets timelines, determines desired images and picture composition, and selects and adjusts subjects, equipment, and lighting to achieve desired artistic effects.
- Captures, develops, and edits film and digital photographs using various software including Adobe Creative Suite, adjusting to formatting specifications of marketing and communications project needs, audiences, and platforms; may delegate basic editing tasks to Photography Assistant(s).
- Regularly consults with marketing and communications staff and other key stakeholders to determine project needs and ensure photographic elements align with strategy and objectives.
- Maintains photographic equipment, including photo lab equipment, lenses, lights, and cameras, inventory; performs basic and more complex equipment repairs.
- Seeks input from peers and stakeholders on a variety of photography projects to evaluate effectiveness of different aesthetics, lighting, images, etc.
- May provide organizational training on photography methodology and strategy.
- May provide guidance to Photography Assistants or lower-level Photographers.
QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required - Bachelor's degree in photography, art, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required - 2 years in relevant field
Preferred
- 3 years of professional marketing and communications experience focusing on photography
- Experience in event photography, portraiture, campaign photography, and lighting with strobes and LED lights

- Proficiency in operating a range of professional equipment, including Apple computers, Canon DSLR cameras and lenses, Profoto strobes, LED lighting, video and audio gear, timelapse equipment, teleprompters, stabilization tools, scanners, color printers, and telephones
- Proficiency in industry-standard software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, Final Cut) for editing photos and videos
- Ability to visually narrate the story of student life in a compelling way that resonates with diverse audiences
Working Conditions / DemandsThis role frequently requires remaining stationary for extended periods, as well as ascending and descending ladders or stairs. It involves moving objects up to 25 pounds and frequently handling heavy photography equipment, such as cameras and lighting gear, while navigating various terrains both indoors and outdoors around campus. Strong visual abilities are essential, including detecting items both near and far, distinguishing between colors, noticing peripheral objects, discerning fine details, and having good depth perception. Effective communication is regularly required in this role. The person in this role must be able to perform these essential functions with or without accommodation.

Advertised Salary$60,000 - $65,000 per year based on education and experience
Work HoursMonday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Work on nights and weekends is required occasionally to photograph events.
