Job Summary:

The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Resident reports directly to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager.

Key responsibilities include participation and management of medical emergencies, pharmacotherapy consultation, bedside medication preparation, as well as the provision of pharmaceutical care to the emergency department patients. Full Time Day Shift - 8:00am-4:30pm

What you will do

• Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist and Patient Care Activities
  Provide recommendations and/or assume responsibility for provision of pharmaceutical care to emergency department patients, provide therapeutic recommendations to ED providers and act as an integral member of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team
  a. Communicate and document direct patient care activities appropriately in the medical record, as required.
  b. Ensure continuity of care during patient transitions between the emergency department and hospital admission or discharge.
  c. Provide recommendations and/or manage medications for all patients within the emergency department.
  d. Attendance and active participation in all alerted medical emergencies including Code FASTs, Traumas, STEMIs, and general medical alerts.
  e. Development of skills for medication calculations, IV preparation, and medication dispensing during medical emergencies.
  f. Provide pharmaceutical care for both critically ill and non-critically ill patients within the emergency department.
  g. Demonstrate responsibility for patient outcomes by prioritizing patient care.
  
• Drug Distribution
  a. Become an integral member of the Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacy (EMCP) Team, including all activities related to the oversight, management, and distribution of medications within the ED.
  b. Manage aspects of the medication-use process related to formulary management and adherence, according to WHS policy, whenever possible.
  c. Prepare, dispense, and manage medications to support safe and effective drug therapy for patients, following best practices and in accordance with WHS policy.
  d. In addition to the above-mentioned activities as they pertain to individual learning experiences throughout the year, the resident will be assigned up to four Pharmaceutical Care Service [staffing] shifts a month, not to exceed 32 hours per month.
  e. Resident's primary location for these Pharmaceutical Care Service shifts will be in the Emergency Department, and within the normal workflow of the EMCP Team. However, in order to continue gaining insight into how the inpatient pharmacy team and the EMCP team work together to support each other toward a common goal, the resident will periodically be assigned to instead complete their shift in the main inpatient pharmacy.
  f. Activities related to medication-use management performed by the resident, regardless of setting, will include but are not limited to the following:
  
  • Check unit dose medications for accuracy
  • Review and verify medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness
  • Oversight of medication preparation to include checking compounded stock bags, prepared first doses of IV admixtures and unit dose medications prepared by technicians
  • Ensure proper technique and accurate preparation of all pharmaceutical products, including oral, IV admixtures, chemotherapeutic, and investigational agents
  • Ensure the timely and accurate dispensing of drugs and solutions from the appropriate pharmacy area
  • Accurately fill and dispense patient specific medications
  • Review physician orders for possible therapeutic problems, contraindications, interactions, allergies, and formulary status of the drug
  • Provide computer order entry for IVs and verbal orders with read-back-and-confirm (RBAC) as indicated per WHS policy
  • Ensure compliance with controlled substance distribution and maintenance system
  • Flexibility to be able to practice in a variety of areas within the pharmacy as dictated by workload, in order to promote the Team approach
• Education
  a. Precept Pharm.D. clerkship students and PGY1 Pharmacy Residents consistent with academic credentials and clinical experience.
  b. Provide presentations, publications, and other informative activities on drug-related topics to the health care community.
  c. Participate in continuing education programs, meetings, training programs and related activities.
  d. Foster growth of medication safety activities through education.
  e. Develop and disseminate information regarding patient and medication safety risks and errors.
  
• Drug Information and Research
  a. Participate in the GME Emergency Medicine Thursday Conferences, as both an attendee and guest lecturer.
  b. Monitor patient outcomes in relation to medication use. Conduct targeted medication education and medication use evaluations as needed.
  c. Provide drug information and pharmacotherapeutic recommendations to health care professionals and to patients.
  d. Assist in formulary maintenance by critiquing new entities, comparing medication classes, and developing therapeutic interchanges, when applicable.
  e. Assist in the development and implementation of new collaborative practice agreements (CPAs) in order to expand services offered by the emergency medicine clinical pharmacy team, as needed.
  f. Complete a research project designed to improve the services of the department
  
• Administration/leadership
  a. Document clinical interventions (pharmacokinetic consultations pharmacotherapeutic consultations, anticoagulation consultations, patient consultations) and cost avoidance as part of the Pharmacy Services and hospital documentation programs.
  b. Participate as the subject matter expert for assigned emergency medicine related facility and system level committees, including policy revision and development
  c. Assist with coordinating local and system residency activities, schedules, programs and projects.
  

Required Minimum Education:

• Doctorate Doctorate in Pharmacy (Pharm D) Required

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

• Reg Pharmacist Preferred
• Basic Life Support Preferred
• BLS - Instructor Preferred
• BLS - Provisional Preferred

Additional Licenses and Certifications:

• Licensed by or eligible for licensure with the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy Required
• If not licensed at the start of residency, the candidate must be licensed by August 31st of their residency year Upon Hire Required

Required Minimum Experience:

• Completion of or enrollment in final year of an accredited post-graduate year 1 Pharmacy Residency Program Required

Required Minimum Skills:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Computer Skills: Microsoft Office suite including Word and PowerPoint
• Strong organizational skills
