Job Title: Mechanical Designer I - Body Shop Tooling & Weld Gun Design

Position Type: Contract

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Mechanical Design Expertise:
    • Approximately 8 years of experience in Body Shop Tooling for Body in White (BIW) Assembly.
    • Proficient in Catia V5 CAD software with a strong understanding of North American Auto Manufacturer standards and specifications for BIW Tooling Fixtures.
    • Extensive knowledge of Body Assembly processes, including geometry setting and fixture tools for framing lines, bodyside systems, and sub-assembly tooling fixture design.
    • Experience in weld gun design and coordination, including working with suppliers to design and develop weld guns.
  • Technical Skills:
    • In-depth understanding of auto assembly strategies, such as part flow within an assembly plant/body shop.
    • Familiarity with GEO and Repot Systems functionality.
    • Ability to develop detailed design drawings and specifications for mechanical equipment, fixtures, tools, and controls using CAD software.
    • Proficiency in creating detailed design drawings and specifications for WeldGun BGA, Cap Adapters, and Servo-Motors.
    • Competence in reviewing and analyzing specifications, sketches, drawings, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and procedures.
    • Skilled in modifying existing 3D and 2D models for "Kits" and creating new designs for simple, intermediate, and complex systems, including developing Kit Sheets showing before and after modifications.
    • Capability to revise designs to correct operating deficiencies or reduce production problems, while adhering to customer specifications and Comau standards.
    • Strong understanding of fixture and detail stack-up methodology and its relation to machining and tool stack-up.
    • Knowledge of customer specifications (corporate and plant), standards, and local/national regulations.
    • Familiarity with NAAMS Standards, customer standards, and CAD file attributes, using CAD check options.
  • Collaboration and Coordination:
    • Ability to coordinate and review designs with Technical Leaders, Project Engineers, Senior Mechanical Engineers, and colleagues to maintain consistency within projects and resolve design issues.
    • Proficiency in using Windows and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and a high degree of competence with CAD platforms and associated application software.
    • Experience in vendor coordination and purchasing components, including importing weld guns, end-of-arm tooling, switches, etc., in model space and paper space.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • 5+ years of mechanical design and engineering experience in Powertrain or an Associate's Degree in Mechanical Technology or equivalent experience.
    • Ability to work independently and within teams.
    • Willingness to travel domestically (5-20%) and internationally as project needs require for technical support.
