Summary:

The Lab Manager- Sapphire supervises and administers all waste-derived fuels laboratory activities, including quality control standards, technical review of candidate fuel streams, and facilitating laboratory compliance with the site operating permit. This position ensures the efficient operation of the waste- derived fuels laboratory through maintenance planning for laboratory equipment and analysis method validation. The position is required to remain available on a 24-hour basis to assist with the lab and processing issues.

What you'll be contributing:

  • Promotes and follows all aspects of safety guidelines (CRH safety 16 live Savings Rules) and participates in meetings.
  • Manages and oversees all aspects of the waste-derived fuels laboratory.
  • Assumes responsibility for the overall safety of the waste-derived fuels lab and conduct safety meetings for lab personnel regularly.
  • Establishes, communicates, and assigns job responsibilities to waste-derived fuels laboratory employees.
  • Hires team member for staff for the waste-derived fuels laboratory.
  • Schedules and maintains laboratory personnel coverage in the waste-derived fuels laboratory.
  • Performs and manages the bi-annual employee badge monitoring program.
  • Approves and performs payroll functions of all direct reports in the Ash Grove UltiPro/Kronos systems.
  • Receives and escorts customers and intercompany visitors through the waste-derived fuels laboratory and communicate the process as needed.
  • Trains new laboratory staff in all areas of the waste-derived fuels laboratory.
  • Maintains personnel and training records for the waste-derived fuels laboratory and keep secure.
  • Assists with scheduling the liquid and solid waste-derived fuels shipments when required.
  • Performs necessary customer environmental audit questionnaires and keep a current audit survey complete for site manager or customer service.
  • Leads the ADEQ, MSHA, or other agency compliance inspections in the laboratory area and maintain compliance in this area.
  • Leads and tracks the accuracy and efficiency aspects of the waste-derived fuels laboratory testing.
  • Assists in the evaluation and approval of new potential waste-derived streams.
  • Understands and implements the Ash Grove Cement Waste Analysis Plan/Feedstream Analysis Plan (WAP/FAP).
  • Provides instruction on the analysis of profile samples using GC/MS-FID instrumentation for potential harmful organic compounds and generate reports for manager approval or rejection.
  • Performs method validations and detection limit studies as required.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new laboratory equipment and maintain a 5 year Capex plan for the waste-derived fuels laboratory.
  • Creates new, and keep current, all waste-derived fuels laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Assists in troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, or installation of all laboratory instrumentation.
  • Performs the radioactive wipe tests on all waste-derived fuels laboratory sources and maintains records and distributes the findings to the appropriate people.
  • Oversees the ordering and completion of laboratory PT studies and corrective actions associated with any deficiencies.
  • Assists in the uploading and report generation from the waste-derived fuels laboratory databases for billing, scheduling of fuels, and annual reporting requirements.
  • Prepares and distributes the quarterly QC report required by the Waste Analysis Plan and Feedstream Analysis Plan (WAP/FAP).
  • Provides reports as requested by upper management.
  • Submits necessary documents annually and maintain the state laboratory accreditation.
  • Assists in keeping all laboratory supplies ordered and stocked.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the supervisor

To succeed in this position, you will need:

  • Minimum 4-year - Bachelors Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field with a minimum of 25 chemistry credits.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in supervisory experience in a lab or related industry
  • Proficient in all functional areas of the laboratory to the degree of operating instrumentation if required.
  • Proficient in problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to build a team, lead a team, and work with groups or contractors.
  • Proficient in English written, verbal communication, and listening skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of the RCRA and MSHA training requirements, must maintain both annually.
  • Ability to use a computer to store data and generate reports.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to refer to the manager when clarification or interpretation of organizational policy.
  • Ability to exercise direct supervision over all waste-derived fuels laboratory personnel at the plant.

What to expect in a cement environment:

Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Mild exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise requires compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 250 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
