Position Summary:

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to hire a full time Human Services Practitioner to serve as a Peer Support Specialist. This position will work with various aspects within the Addiction Medicine Program, including the outpatient STAR clinic, the UNC Addiction Medicine Consult Service and the ATLAS mobile clinic. The Peer Support Specialist utilizes their own experiences to offer individuals assistance in achieving stability and obtaining and maintaining the level of coping and basic life skills that is consistent with their treatment goals. The Peer Support Specialist will work within a treatment team in a collaborative environment. The Peer Support Specialist will assist with appropriate linkages, referrals, coordination, follow-up to needed support services, and direct care services.

A fundamental feature of Peer Support Specialist is that the services may be provided in the clinical setting (outpatient clinic, emergency department, or mobile clinic) as well as in the natural environment, which includes any location except the Peer Support Specialist's home. The Peer Support Specialist assumes a lead role in assisting patients with their healthcare needs, including treatment for substance use, mental health and physical health. Through an integrated approach, the Peer Support Specialist utilizes their own experiences to offer individuals assistance in achieving stability and obtaining and maintaining the level of coping and basic life skills that is consistent with their treatment goals.

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Providing recovery and peer support services
  • Functioning as a member of the addiction medicine program
  • Promoting the recovery culture of the organization
  • Contributing to the clinical integrity of the addiction medicine program
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Associate's degree in a related Human Services discipline and two years of experience related to the area of assignment, or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Peer Support must be delivered by individuals in recovery who have experience living with a substance use disorder.
  • North Carolina Peer Support Certification

To be a certified Peer Support Specialist, the following criteria must be met:
  1. Self-identify as an individual with life experience of being diagnosed with a serious mental illness or addictive disorder which meets Federal Definitions, and
  2. Is well grounded and actively committed to their own recovery and
  3. Receive supervision by a Qualified Professional (QP), and
  4. Are not a family member of the individual who receives Peer Support services, and
  5. Complete 40 hours of Peer Support Specialist training and 20 hours additional training creditable towards the candidates Peer Support certification
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Experience with Community Based Service Models.
  • Experience with Community Outreach and providing support services.

  • Driver's License
  • Peer Support Certification
