Histology Associate, Per Diem - Day/Evening
Job Summary
The Histology Associate, Per Diem is responsible for supporting daily laboratory operations, including the maintenance of equipment, management of tissue blocks and slides, and the preparation of reagents. This position involves ensuring quality control of laboratory materials, accurate documentation, and facilitating the workflow of histology tasks. The Histology Associate will work closely with technical staff, residents, and pathologists to ensure timely processing and distribution of samples. This role may require rotating off-hours pager coverage and is integral to maintaining a well-organized, efficient laboratory environment.
Qualifications
Key Responsibilities:

Daily Laboratory Maintenance:
- Maintain all laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, fixation stations, embedding centers, and stainers.
- Dispose of chemical waste per departmental and hospital regulations.

LIS Software Utilization:
- Use Laboratory Information System (LIS) software for tracking, error reports, and worklist printing.
- Ensure quality control of blocks and slides and distribute them to pathologists and residents.

Block and Slide Management:
- Collect, organize, and distribute blocks and slides for clinical testing and optimization.
- Manage tracking and storage systems for slides and blocks.

Send-Out Testing:
- Coordinate send-out testing to CLIA-approved laboratories, ensuring accurate electronic documentation and courier arrangements.

Solution and Reagent Preparation:
- Prepare and maintain reagents and solutions as per approved procedures.
- Clean and set up the frozen section laboratory, including preparation of staining solutions.

LIS Operations:
- Perform daily laboratory operations using LIS and participate in its implementation and optimization through feedback.

Slide Delivery and Case Compilation:
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery of slides with associated paperwork, compiling complete cases as required.

ARCOS Archive System:
- Perform daily duties within the ARCOS archive system and promptly report any discrepancies.

Lab Cleanliness:
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory, reduce clutter, and ensure the removal of paraffin from processing room floors daily.

Other Duties:
- Para-trim blocks for timely microtomy preparation.
- Report low supply stock to the inventory officer or supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of histology laboratory functions and their relevance to patient care.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and strong math skills preferred.
- HT(ASCP) eligibility is preferred but not required.
Additional Information:
This is a per diem position with day/evening shifts, including potential rotating pager coverage during off-hours.
