JOB DUTIES:
- Manage, supervise, and oversee the work and testing activities in the Omaha Branch Laboratory and assigned personnel.
- Maintain surveillance of all sampling, testing, reporting, and documentation of materials used in the maintenance and construction of highways and bridges as required, regularly visiting projects throughout District 2.
- Accurate knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM testing standards and laboratory proficiency testing.
- Attend preconstruction meetings.
- Responsible for Independent Assurance reviews of materials testing technicians as defined by the NDOT Quality Assurance Program for Construction, the calibration of all testing equipment used by field construction and maintenance personnel, and maintaining accurate documentation and records.
- Perform general upkeep of the laboratory area and testing equipment.
- Instruct and advise construction and maintenance personnel on material specifications, standards, manuals, and testing.
- Assist in teaching and training of educational programs for construction and maintenance personnel, creating and presenting written and oral communications.
- Maintain regular communication with the Lincoln Central Lab and Assistant Materials & Research Engineer.
- Review contract specifications and special provisions to ensure that required samples are being taken and that the correct/accurate tests are performed and results are documented.
Requirements / Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: High school education
plus ten years experience related to agency function;
or Bachelor's degree in geology or related field
plus five years experience related to agency function;
or Bachelor's degree in engineering
plus four years experience related to agency function. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Nebraska is desirable and may substitute for two years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience of test procedures for testing of concrete, soils, asphalt, and aggregates.
- Experience in Materials Testing and Construction Operations.
- Experience in the listed computer applications (Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint, SiteManager/AWP).
- Certified in NDOT Asphalt Technician Training and ACI Concrete Field Technician and Strength Testing Technician.
- Experience overseeing multiple projects at once.
- Supervisory Experience.
Other:
- Must have a valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
- Must be available for out-of-town work and occasional overnight travel.
- Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of highway construction materials.
- Ability to exercise sound scientific judgment in supervising quality control and subordinates.
- Ability to follow administrative direction.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain records and reports.
- Ability to program Excel spreadsheets and laboratory testing and reporting software such as AASHTOWare.
