Discover Impactful Work:

Maintains environmental, health and safety program and supports multiple sites across the organization. Assists management team with monitoring environmental compliance and safety metrics (i.e. chemical safety, ergonomics, illness and injury prevention). Conducts compliance training, audits and inspects sites or lab environments to ensure compliance with global occupational safety and health standards. Recommends corrective action where hazards or risks exist. Helps manage current OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) sites as well as assist other sites with preparing for and obtaining their VPP Star designation.

A day in the Life:

  • Practices and enforces good safety practices. Responds to inquiries and provides follow-up to health, safety, and environmental issues to site management.
  • Supports Associate Director, Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) in ensuring that all licensing, permitting, or other environmental, health or safety requirements are met and take appropriate actions to ensure that any non-compliance issues are addressed.
  • Conducts investigations and responds to EHS incidents, chemical spills, injuries, near misses, and identified EHS hazards. Identifies and completes corrective actions as required.
  • Ensures that procedures meet federal, state, and local requirements (i.e. OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.). Develops and updates health and safety related programs, training, and SOPs.
  • Updates management on new or changed regulations in a timely manner. Makes recommendations on feasible solutions and alternatives for compliance.
  • Ensures safe removal and disposal of hazardous chemical and biological waste from facility on a regular basis. Maintains and monitors waste manifest system. Completes reporting forms and documents for all required regulatory agencies.
  • Develops, conducts and supports employee health and safety training programs, including refresher trainings as required by regulations.
  • Conducts regular safety walk-downs and conducts employee health hazard exposure monitoring to ensure OSHA compliance. Oversees ergonomic related issues and makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with corporate Worker's Compensation Administrator to supply information on related claims to insurance company. Assists with or conducts work-related injury/illness investigations.
  • Maintains safety equipment inventory, performs periodic safety inspections, monitors hazardous waste removal vendors, and may assist in consolidating hazardous wastes.
Keys to Success:

Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification
Experience
  • Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job
  • EHS Specialist II: comparable to 2+ years
  • EHS Specialist III: comparable to 5+ years
In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • A degree in Safety, Chemistry, Engineering, or other EHS related fields of study is preferred
  • Previous experience working in a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) laboratory with chemicals and samples is highly preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, IATA, and other applicable regulations
  • Firm knowledge of laboratory and hazardous waste regulations to include hazardous chemical/biohazard storage and disposal regulations
  • Knowledge and experience working in a laboratory and with hazardous substances and chemicals
  • Experience with industrial hygiene air monitoring strategies
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to provide effective training
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong judgment and business acumen
  • Strong computer skills
