Job Role Summary

The Cytotechnologist performs microscopic examination of gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration specimens, evaluating the adequacy and identifying any premalignant and malignant changes, as well as other benign or infectious entities. The Cytotechnologist enters and verifies their interpretations in the laboratory information system, and refers the appropriate specimens to a pathologist for final signout. The Cytotechnologist assists on the collection of fine needle aspiration specimens. The Cytotechnologist may also process, stain, and coverslip cytologic specimens for microscopic examination. Cytotechnology students are supervised and over screened by the Cytotechnologist.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Performs microscopic examination of specimens to assess adequacy and to detect evidence of premalignant and malignant cellular changes and other pathological conditions, and performs quality control rescreening if qualified, and refers appropriate cases to the cytopathologist for final signout
  • Submits a minimum of 10% of negative gynecologic specimens for quality control rescreening, including both random and high risk, achieves a screening accuracy of at least 98% on the six month individual workload evaluation, and maintains a gynecologic abnormal rate that is within 70% of the lab average
  • Maintains turnaround time standards for patient testing
  • Actively participates in the fine needle aspiration service
  • Evaluates the acceptability of specimens submitted for cytologic testing and prepares them selecting the most appropriate techniques for optimal results
  • Achieves a score of at least 90% on the annual CMS-approved gynecologic cytology proficiency exam, and participates in the gynecologic and non-gynecologic glass slide programs with acceptable responses
  • Assists in the training and evaluation of newly hired cytotechnologists, cytology preparatory technicians, and cytotechnology students
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency standards and maintains accurate documentation
  • Functions as a self-starter, arrives to work on time and on scheduled days, begins work promptly
  • Follows section/departmental policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors during all phases of testing
  • Completes assignments/mandatories according to policies and procedures, with complete documentation and within the designated time frames, including, but not limited to: Procedure and policy reviews, read and signs, annual TB testing and flu shots, section competencies, proficiency testing, Eskenazi Health annual education, and at least twelve credit hours of continuing education per calendar year
  • Ensures that laboratory management is informed of existing and/or potential departmental problems that require decisions or intervention to resolve. Assumes leadership role in the absence of manager
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with successful completion of a twelve month Cytotechnology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA). Foreign degrees must be officially assessed to determine US equivalent. ASCP certification or equivalent in Cytotechnology required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of established cytology criteria to accurately interpret gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration specimens
  • Knowledge of cytopreparatory techniques and skills to select the appropriate techniques to optimize cell retrieval and specimen quality
  • Knowledge of CAP regulations as they apply to test performance, quality control, instrument maintenance, proficiency testing, and laboratory safety
