SUMMARY

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for assisting with writing and communication projects that support a cohesive federal communication strategy which includes workforce communications for a diverse group of civilians and military and external public affairs opportunities. Plans and implements communication strategies for the Defense Health Agency. This full-time position is hybrid to the Falls Church, VA area, expect to be onsite 3 days a week.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two to four (2-4) years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Experience supporting the Department of Defense in the same or similar capacity preferred; experience and understanding of the Military Health System and DHA is highly desired.

Excellent writing and communications skills, including social media.

Strong research skills.

Attention to detail in editing and formatting documents and in preparing products and emails for clients.

Experience in public affairs or public policy communications, and a working knowledge of U.S. politics, elections, the Hill, and media relations (pitching reporters, framing stories, press releases, media markets, etc.).

Must be a self-starter able to work both in teams and independently and be unafraid to ask for help or clarification when needed.

Able to interact professionally with people at all levels of client and other organizations.

Must be able to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and be flexible to work with different kinds of clients and change focus in rapid-response situations.

Work well under the pressure associated with multiple short-notice deadlines.

Must be very comfortable with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), collaborative tools (MS Teams, SharePoint, etc.).

Knowledge of media tools (Meltwater, Cision, etc.) and social media tools (Hootsuite, Sprout Social, etc.) is a plus.

Some experience with design programs (Adobe, Canva, Piktochart, etc.) and/or video tools (iMovie, Adobe Premiere, etc.) is a plus.

May travel 10% of the time.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Supports the implementation of cohesive communications strategies that span social media, media relations, email campaigns, and related communications strategies.

Coaches and mentors other communications professionals on the team.

Creates and implements communications material that delivers consistent key messages to target audiences through appropriate channels that are consistent with branding, messaging, and digital (social media) strategies.

Engages with project stakeholders in written and oral communication effectively and professionally. Prepares quality client deliverables.

Supports public engagements, inward-facing engagements (leading the planning and execution of Agency events), media relations, knowledge management, and preserving the agency's history.

Elevates the brand awareness through events, social media, DISA.mil and other communication channels.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two to four (2-4) years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Regularly required to sit. Occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Exposed to general office noise with computers printers and light traffic.

The estimated pay range for this role is $90K to $105K, with the final offer contingent on location, skillset, and experience.
