Clinical Care Faculty

Education and/or Experience   

The Clinical Care Faculty (CCF) must have earned a DDS/DMD degree, preferably from a CODA accredited U.S. dental institution. An Arizona License and DEA License are also required. The applicant should have a minimum of five (5) years in private/clinical practice environment. The applicant should be a person committed to educating and empowering students with a wide range of clinical and academic abilities. The applicant should be conversant in modern digital technologies, techniques, and dental materials.

Reporting to the Clinical Care Coordinator (CCC) of the respective suite, the CCF will:

  1. Advise the CCC on college-wide academic issues to assist in moving the institution to its vision of academic excellence
  2. Maintain an open-door policy on the part of administrators and faculty for students in need of counseling
  3. Establish a welcoming atmosphere to improve morale and to promote collegiality among students, staff and faculty
  4. Be a positive role model for students
  5. Become competent in the use of the EHR systems
  6. Become competent in the use of CAD/CAM dentistry
  7. Maintain/obtain a standard proficiency laser certification
  8. Demonstrate competency in the restoration of dental implants
  9. Demonstrate competency in the removal of teeth, both simple and complex, including skills such as: sectioning teeth, laying a flap, socket preservation, and suturing.
  10. demonstrate competency in simple and moderately complex endodontic procedures.
  11. Act as a leader and mentor
  12. Clinically supervise the students in the suite
  13. Meet with each student on a regular basis to review their clinical progress and individual patient treatment progress
  14. Identify and meet with students having difficulty as needed
  15. Be responsible for the attendance of students within the suite
  16. Address problems of faculty, staff and students conferring with the suite CCC
  17. Identify discrepancies in patient needs and patient assignments among the students
  18. Oversee and help manage student portfolios; this will include number of patients in each pair, percent of patients seen in given time, list of patients not receiving care within the last month, reason for non-activity, clinic attendance, broken appointment rate and general time management
  19. Along with the student, assume responsibility for patient selection and assignment of patients for students
  20. Offer students guidance and direction in care of patients by monitoring data on progress and performance
  21. Help CCCs with student productivity and attainment of competency
  22. Advise students on professional conduct and practice management and assist the faculty and staff of their suite with solving patient-related problems
  23. Meet periodically with individual students and groups of students to:
  24. Review practice plan
  25. Review patient resources
  26. Review individual and group progress
  27. Assist in establishing group goals
  28. Provide the CCC information (based on meetings with students and staff) necessary to assure equitable distribution of patients based on students’ needs
  29. Evaluate each student’s Professionalism and Practice Management skills by reporting instances of misconduct, patient abandonment, refusal to comply with established protocol, or disregard for the patients’ welfare first to the suite CCC and then to the Associate Dean for Clinical Education
  30. Report to the CCC, then the Associate Dean for Clinical Education instances when faculty or staff attempts to correct misconduct have failed
  31. Determine student compliance with departmental expectations and periodically review same with the student
  32. Assist all students in assigned suite with quality patient care
  33. Demonstrate clinical treatment on patients assigned to students
  34. Under the direction of the CCC, attempt to equalize student learning opportunities; this may be achieved by initial input into patient assignments and by redistribution of patients within the pool of patients as well as advise on priorities, use of time, and need for new patients
  35. In collaboration with the CCC, use EHR reports to inform faculty and students of the real costs of care delivery and establish realistic targets for production and collections in the spirit of sound practice management principles to enhance student education as well as clinical productivity
  36. Under the direction of the CCC, conduct an entrance conference with all new students to assess patient rosters and assure a smooth transition into the clinic
  37. Assure all case completions have an exit exam
  38. Assure all laboratory work is sent out and delivered in a timely fashion
  39. Perform other duties as assigned
  40. Meet regularly with the CCC

  1. This position involves being in the dental institute clinic during clinic hours, walking between operatories. The CCF is expected to actively circulate through the suite during operating hours
  2. This position requires the faculty to work chairside to evaluate procedures that are being performed by students.
  3. This position requires the faculty to sit or stand chairside and demonstrate procedures on a patent or mannequin.
  4. This position requires the faculty to sit or stand chairside performing/taking these procedures to completion as needed.
  5. This position requires the faculty to perform/demonstrate intraoral scanning, CAD design of indirect restorations, staining and glazing of indirect restorations, and soft tissue laser dentistry using a diode.
  6. This position requires the faculty to perform/demonstrate surgical techniques for the removal of teeth with simple as well as surgical techniques.
  7. This position requires the faculty to perform/demonstrate endodontic procedures.
  8. The employee must be able to use a computer for extended periods of time.
  9. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  10. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, including looking at a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
