Job Description:
The Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a Child Care Inspection Specialist (X62710) to travel throughout Northeast Nebraska to ensure quality child care is available for Nebraska's children. This is one way DHHS helps Nebraskans live better lives.

Job Duties:

As a Child Care Inspection Specialist, you will:

  • Conduct mandated inspections at childcare and preschool facilities in Cass, Colfax, Cuming, Dodge, Platte, and Washington Counties.
  • Inform and educate childcare providers on the requirements to obtain and retain a childcare license.
  • Conduct complaint investigations on licensed facilities and unlicensed child care, sometimes coordinating with other agencies, such as Law Enforcement or Children and Family Services.
  • Recommend and initiate the appropriate licensing response to regulation violations and testify at appeal hearings when necessary.

*** This is primarily a field position requiring the ability to travel and work independently daily.

Requirements/ Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in elementary or early childhood education, human development, sociology, psychology, child development, social work, nursing, or related field. Experience as an inspector/complaint investigator in human services licensing, child welfare investigator, and/or children's services provider at the level of licensee, director, or assistant director of a child care center.

Other: A Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required. Daily travel is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Developmentally appropriate practices that enhance the emotional, social, and intellectual growth of children.
  • Components of quality children's programs.
  • Key issues that impact quality early childhood programs.
  • Microsoft Office Software.

Skills/ Abilities:
  • Communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, efficient manner, interpret and apply regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Prioritize and work independently, while maintaining accuracy. Ability to communicate and coordinate with team members, licensees, and other partners in a courteous, professional, and timely manner.
  • Quickly analyze difficult situations and develop strategies to overcome them.
  • Evaluate and determine the appropriateness of children's programs. Compare data with established criteria to determine similarities and differences and identify conformity with standards.
