Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Certified Surgical Technologist - PRN is an individual with specialized education who functions as a member of the operating room team to help ensure safe, efficient, and successful surgical procedures/outcomes. The CST handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for surgical procedures; has an understanding of the procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon; has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative phase; and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. This position will work on an as needed, PRN schedule.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Performs assigned surgical procedures and preparations in conjunction with the activities of the total surgical team on a PRN, as needed basis
• Assists surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to facilitate safe and effective patient care
• Anticipates and responds to surgeons' needs by having appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures
• Maintains sterile technique/environment
• Prepares operating room for surgical procedures with appropriate supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for each assigned case
• Prepares/maintains/labels medication on the sterile field accurately and according to procedure
• Provides for appropriate handling/labeling/disposition of surgical specimens
• Performs appropriate counts with Circulating Nurse as required by policy
• Responds to and functions effectively in emergency situations
• Assists with patient positioning and positioning devices, and providing patient comfort measures
• Gowns and gloves self and other sterile personnel
• Prepares/maintains sterile field and drapes for procedures
• Handles, cares for, cleans, and passes instruments
• Assists/holds retractors
• Prepares/places sterile dressings
• Accounts for all instrumentation
• Cleans and stocks room to prepare for following procedures
• OB/OR PACU CST additional duties include:
 Cleaning and restocking warmers, delivery tables, and LDR supplies
 Checking for outdated supplies before restocking
 Setting up ready rooms and stock rooms including linen, masks, boots, and hats
 Setting up infant warmers in OR
 Stocking anesthesia cart with supplies and check for out dated items
 Assisting RN in delivery room obtaining supplies and equipment
 Performing safety check on the eye wash station per hospital policy
 Transporting specimens to pathology per hospital policy
 Preparing instruments for processing
 Delivering and retrieving instrument carts to CSR
 Assisting RN with circumcisions
 Cleaning and restocking circumcision room
 Communicating with Clinical Manager supplies/instruments that need to be special ordered
 Arranging for recyclable instruments to be picked up from the unit

Job Requirements

• Current CST certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or has completed a military surgical technology program Those with military training (i.e. "Operating Room Specialist" certification) must obtain their CST certification through the NBSTSA within three months of their start date. New graduates must obtain CST certification within 45 days of their start date.
• CSTs must complete 60 hours of approved continuing education in a 4-year timeframe with 15 CEUs turned into education every year
• Current BLS certification
• Member of professional organization (AST) preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Skills in the use of sterilization equipment, highly technical surgical equipment, and accurate use and care of instrumentation
• Knowledge and application of anatomy/physiology and nursing theory/practice as it applies to surgical procedures
• Knowledge of instruments/supplies/equipment required for surgical procedures including sequence of use
• Ability to identify/apply principles of asepsis, disinfection, sterilization, and environmental control
• Ability to plan/prepare for surgical interventions based on the individualized needs of each patient, maintain empathetic attitude toward patients
• Ability to make sound decisions during highly stressful situations, anticipate/prioritize to maintain proficient performance
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written
• Ability to follow exact specifications, and oral/written instructions
• Ability to concentrate and exhibit continuous attention/perception during surgery-related tasks, obtain/accurately document information appropriate to perioperative patient care
• Knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret information needed to identify each patient's age-specific needs. Ability to use age appropriate communication skills. Age appropriate cognitive abilities, skills, techniques and communications are detailed in the department age specific competencies
