The Opportunity:

The School of Design and Construction (SDC) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a full-time faculty member as a continuous career track (non-tenure track) Assistant Professor OR a permanent tenure-track Assistant Professor within the Construction Management program. We seek candidates who are student-centered, collaborative, possess relevant industry experience, and are technologically and professionally competent.

The Construction Management (CM) program exists within the SDC which is comprised of academic degree programs in Architecture, Construction Management, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture. The SDC is housed within the Voiland College of Engineering & Architecture (VCEA), providing access and potential collaborations with faculty and students in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science. The curriculum is a four-year professional program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management. Upon completion of prerequisite courses, pre-professional students must apply after their first year to be admitted into the program and complete the final three years. The CM program has a robust in-house student internship and full-time recruiting program, active industry partners, and an engaged advisory board. Additionally, many non-CM students enrolled in our CM Minor program that consists of students from many disciplines including Business, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and Civil Engineering.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Qualifications - (Open Track) Position:

Career-Track Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach lecture, lecture/lab, and seminar courses central to the core CM curriculum in the CM (B.S.) program and allied disciplines within the SDC. Courses include, but are not limited to, materials and methods, project delivery, construction cost accounting, construction law, estimating, and scheduling. Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in program and SDC committees; mentor students; and provide continuing education or short courses to industry and students. The ability to conduct research and scholarly activities in a defined area of interest is beneficial but not required. This is a 100% FTE position with an 80% Teaching, 20% Service workload distribution.

Tenure-Track Duties and Responsibilities:

Similar qualifications as above are expected for a tenure-track candidate. The successful candidate is also required to conduct research/scholarship in a defined area related to the built environment disciplines resulting in external grant funding and peer reviewed publications. This is a 100% FTE position with a 40% research, 40% Teaching, 20% Service workload distribution.

Required Qualifications for Career-Track Assistant Professor:

  • Professional Master's degree in Construction Management or related discipline from an accredited institution.

  • Candidate must have a demonstrated teaching record, four (4) years or more of relevant construction industry experience in the United States, and a proven record of collaborative work within the construction (building) industry.

Required Qualifications for Tenure-Track Assistant Professor:

  • PhD in Construction Management or related discipline from an accredited institution. All but dissertation will be considered with an expectation of completion within one (1) year of hiring date.

  • Demonstrated potential to develop a nationally recognized research program with peer reviewed publications.

  • Record of external funding and publications for research.

  • Have a demonstrated teaching record, a minimum of three (3) years of relevant construction industry experience in the United States, and a proven record of collaborative work within the construction (building) industry.

Required Qualifications for all Candidates:

  • Have a demonstrated ability to teach core curriculum courses (e.g. materials and methods, project management/project delivery, construction cost accounting, construction law, estimating, BIM/VDC, and scheduling) in the undergraduate B.S. Construction Management program and allied disciplines in the school.

  • Willing and able to engage with students and industry partners, including the mentorship of students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications for all Candidates:

  • Professional registration/certification such as PE, AIA, LEED, CPC, NCDIQ, or DBIA.

  • Demonstrated higher education teaching experience (5 years +) in a construction management program.

  • Demonstrated construction industry experience (5 years +) in one or more of the following construction market sectors: commercial, large-scale residential construction, heavy civil, infrastructure, or specialty contracting.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including collaboration and teamwork.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
