Position Summary

As a member of the Career Services Network (CSN) team, this position will serve as an in-house career consultant for the College of Natural Science (NatSci). Provide NatSci-specific and interest area career advising in a variety of modalities, including but not limited to on-site (in multiple spaces across the College) and virtual, with a focus on career planning, graduate/professional school preparation, and implementing job search strategies. Partner with NatSci and CSN colleagues to deliver specialized programming for NatSci students and for select career interest areas (STEM, Health Sciences). Focus on advancing the career and professional development of NatSci students through alignment of advising, programming, and career resources with NatSci's career development strategy (Career Readiness Cycle) while engaging the resources, programming, and services of the Career Services Network.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Undergraduate Academic & Student Affairs colleagues (Experiential Learning, Pre-Health, Student Success, Academic Advising), academic advisors, faculty, specialists, career services colleagues, and alumni to effectively implement NatSci's career development strategy (Career Readiness Cycle) and deliver comprehensive career services for NatSci students.
  • Provide NatSci-specific and interest area career advising in a wide range of modalities (in-person, online, group, individual) and in multiple campus locations to students and recent alumni (within 2 years of graduation) focused on career planning, continuing education, and job-search strategies. Provide referrals, as needed, to Pre-Health advising for students preparing to apply to health-related professional schools and disciplinary faculty for students applying to graduate programs. Review electronically submitted resumes and cover letters.
  • Administer and interpret career assessments in individual and group settings including the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, and Focus 2.
  • Connect students to resources, programming, and services of the College of Natural Science and the Career Services Network through direct marketing, outreach, referrals, and collaborations with colleagues including the NatSci Experiential Learning Office, Pre-Health Advising, academic advisors, faculty, and academic specialists.
  • Work collaboratively with NatSci leadership to set goals, integrate career education and services into strategic plans and curricula, and collaborate on college activities and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement specialized career education programming and resources focused on career planning, internship/job search strategies, and professional skill-building for students within the College, in alignment with NatSci's career development strategy (Career Readiness Cycle).
  • Partner with Career Services colleagues across campus to deliver joint programming including a general workshop series and career interest area exploration/exposure events. Assist in supporting large Career Services Network events, such as career fairs.
  • Build relationships with employers, in collaboration with the CSN Employer Engagement Team, to identify and promote job and internship opportunities for NatSci students. Work with NatSci's Advancement team to leverage alumni networks to support career development through alumni presentations and mentoring.
  • Support efforts to assess the impact of career programs and services using a variety of assessment strategies in partnership with NatSci colleagues.
  • Support career services data collection and reporting efforts for NatSci destination and internship outcomes.
  • Prepare written communications, annual reports, and multi-media materials for distribution to constituents and stakeholders. Contribute to Career Services Network and other campus publications.
  • Participate in relevant internal and external groups and committees focused on career services and student success.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Build and sustain strong professional relationships and networks.
  • Attend, present, and represent the Career Services Network and the College of Natural Science at professional conferences.

Communications/Interpersonal Relationships
Interacts with:

  • Students/Alumni - to advise on job search, career development, and career planning concerns, distribute information, make presentations, and evaluate career services.
  • Faculty/Staff/Administrators - to exchange information and coordinate career development and placement activities in a collaborative framework.
  • Employers - to identify internship and job opportunities, and market students and degree programs.
  • Co-Workers - to collaborate in developing, implementing, and evaluating goals and objectives in a team environment.
  • Director and Assistant Director(s) of Career Services and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Dean and Directors of Undergraduate Academic & Student Affairs in the College of Natural Science - to receive guidance and direction for work activities, exchange information, or collaborate on unit initiatives and activities.
  • Public - to respond to inquiries and promote awareness.

Impact on Programs/Services/Operations

Inefficient processes and ineffective communications could result in the loss of job/academic/career opportunities for students. Inefficient and ineffective services and programs could negatively impact desired outcomes and damage the image of the Career Services Network and College of Natural Science.

Work Environment

Standard office environment.

All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a master's degree in education, counseling, or related area; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in Human Resources and/or career counseling; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of career development, job search techniques, and employer hiring practices at the university level, preferably within STEM and/or Health Sciences fields; experience working with university students in a career advising role or other career-related setting; excellent customer service skills and attitude; willingness and ability to take initiative; desire and ability to build relationships with faculty, specialists, and staff in the College of Natural Science, other units and offices at MSU, employers, and alumni; ability to function as a member of a team with a common goal of departmental success. Strong desire to work with university students on career and professional development.
