Role Description

This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Animal Research Support functions for the assigned area of responsibility at the Kalamazoo and/or Richland site, to maximize the utilization of the facility(s) and personnel to coordinate the planning and execution of studies in an efficient manner, to a high standard and in compliance with all applicable regulations, SOP's, policies and guidelines. Responsible for excellence in animal care, compliance with all federal, state and local laws pertaining to animal research, and performing

excellent in-vivo studies. Ad hoc membership of the IACUC is required. Required participation on the Animal Research Support Leadership Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Director of ARS, serves on the ARS Leadership team, plays a large role in the conduct of ARS business. Responsibilities may include at least one the following:

  • Maximize utilization and efficiency of building and vivarium spaces.
  • Oversight of Managerial Staff, Study Coordinators, and Technical Staff.
  • Responsibility for ensuring the ARS team provides high quality veterinary care, technical support and animal care for studies.
  • Oversee training/development of managers and ensure all aspects of the performance management and staff development processes are completed.
  • Liaise with VMRD Line Heads/partner groups to align capabilities with VMRD needs.
  • Ensure prioritization of workload and resource allocation across work groups and in alignment with VMLT goals.
  • Act as a primary point of contact with IACUC and Attending Veterinarian to implement preventative medicine programs and animal welfare recommendations and ensure work performed meets USDA standards and maintains AAALAC accreditation.
  • Oversee the acquisition of all animal purchases. Maintain appropriate animal tracking and medical record processes and systems.
  • Liaise with FME to ensure facilities meet operational and animal welfare requirements.
  • Liaise with Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Health and Safety to ensure colleague safety while performing work for VMRD/Zoetis.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum B.S. in Animal Science or related field.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience required. 5-10 years of supervisory experience, preferred.
