The Graduate School supports graduate students in almost every program across the Carolina campus and serves students from admission through graduation. We provide financial support (e.g. interdisciplinary fellowships, tuition support, travel awards, and research supplements), career and professional development (e.g. in pedagogy, leadership, communication, grant writing), diversity and student success programming, academic program support, and advocacy to students, faculty, staff, and graduate programs. The Graduate School also provides individual students with services tailored to meet their needs.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a dedicated and team-oriented Assistant Director for the Student Success (SS) program. The SS program plays a vital role in promoting student retention and degree completion, with a particular focus on developing initiatives for diverse graduate student populations across campus.

In this role, the Assistant Director will support the Director in creating and implementing programs designed to assist various graduate student groups. These programs will encompass academic, professional, and social development to align with the goals of SS and address the needs of students. The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Director to assess student needs, work with campus partners, and participate in committees, working groups, and task forces. Additionally, this role will involve consulting with students, the SS Director, and Graduate School leadership to identify student needs and make referrals as appropriate.

The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of the SS program and will have frequent interaction with graduate students.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Knowledge of project management experience to implement specific initiatives to assist different student populations.
Ability to provide strong oral and written communication skills to establish networks and collaborations with other campus units.
Ability to develop and implement organizational skills for program planning.
Ability to work independently but collaboratively within a team environment to meet expected goals.
Ability to be flexible and meet business needs for a variety of programming activities.
Ability to work with students of diverse personal and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience working in a graduate school and/or higher education setting
Experience facilitating and presenting programs and workshops.
Experience with data collection, analysis, and assessment.
Experience with spreadsheets and presentation programs such as Excel and PowerPoint.
Working knowledge of WordPress, social media, Adobe Creative Suite, and other communications/ marketing software.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.

Position/Schedule Requirements:

Evening work occasionally, Weekend work occasionally
