Job Description
Under the direction of the Program Manager for Program Excel, the Academic Mentor provides academic counseling, retention coaching and intervention to first generation, income-eligible students and students with disabilities and helps students persist to a college degree; provides individual services to help students set and monitor academic and financial goals, increase financial literacy, learn to navigate college procedures and systems, improve self-efficacy, develop career materials and practices; assists with grant activities/events; assists with data collection, reporting and analysis; audits and maintains electronic and paper files; assists with training new grant staff; may provide professional tutoring; recruits participants; shares responsibility for meeting grant-funded goals and collaborates with other student support staff, campus faculty/advisors and others to assist students; position is funded through a U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant, and employment is contingent on continued grant funding; position is full-time regular, 52/52 weeks.

Position is located at Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) in Wooster, OH.

Experience Required

  • 2 years of relevant experience required: Providing individual college student support services, including some experience helping students develop and monitor personal/academic goals.
  • Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality and handle sensitive student data and information responsibly.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build and sustain positive working relationships through multiple sessions with diverse populations of students who are first-generation college students, have high financial need, and/or students with disabilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and influence students using understanding and empathy; ability to effectively "read" and appropriately interpret verbal and nonverbal communication to determine needs.
  • Ability to effectively coach/counsel/advise students to help them improve their academic, financial, personal skills and performance while fostering a working relationship built on mutual respect and trust.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators, including the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in a positive team-oriented manner. Demonstrated experience successfully building, fostering, and maintaining educational and institutional relationships.
  • Ability to effectively use various student information/advising/learning/business systems/platforms/applications, including MS Word and Excel. Ability to effectively interpret a variety of information presented in oral or written formats.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and use work time effectively.

Education Required

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience Preferred

Strongly prefer experience working with first generation college students, students with high financial need, and students with disabilities.

Strongly prefer experience in college academic advising and/or professional counseling or related experience.

Education Desired
Bachelor's Degree

Responsibilities

65% - Provide individual, proactive advising, academic counseling and retention coaching for project students; assist with collection, reporting, analysis and evaluation of student data and program data; provide direct academic intervention, including advising for achieving and maintaining good academic standing, helping students learn effective study and organization habits, self-monitoring and self-evaluation strategies; assess students' academic needs and areas for non-cognitive development and tailor service to meet those needs; monitor and report individual student progress toward degree completion and/or transfer to 4-year degree; create and maintain electronic notations in institution data systems; maintain paper files; assist with annual performance data collection and reporting; assist with ongoing program evaluation; may provide subject-specific individual and small group professional tutoring

15% - With other PE mentors, lead the projects participant recruitment efforts and programs; serve as a primary referral source to other project and campus student services; plan and implement activities and events; develop recruitment initiatives; provide comprehensive, sustained efforts to reach, recruit and continually serve participants; select and assess students; develop and maintain promotional media and recruitment tools

15% - assist students in developing and evaluating individual academic and financial management plans for completing a college degree and/or transferring to a 4-year degree program; assess students college academic and financial management needs; help students learn how to navigate college procedures and systems; assist students with creating job search materials and practicing interview techniques; provide financial literacy education; help students learn how to complete the FAFSA and scholarship applications

5% - promote the project's goals and objectives to students, the campus community and stakeholders; foster an understanding of the needs of first generation, income-eligible college students and students with disabilities within the campus community and among stakeholders; collaborate with PE staff and other campus community partners on behalf of project students and PE goals and initiatives; participate in online, local and national professional development; participate in campus community activities
