Job Summary
The Academic Coordinator position will be responsible for intentionally engaging with the students to track their academic progress and ensure that they are on the right track for graduation. Recruitment of students for the program is a major responsibility of this position.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Works closely with assigned high schools in the grant to meet with students regularly about academics.
- Works diligently to recruit students that qualify for the program.
- Develops programming that provides students with information that aids in the mental, physical, academic, personal, and professional development of the students.
- Coordinates the development, planning and implementation of academic program services and activities designed to increase high school success and college readiness of under-served populations.
- Creates, develops, and implements curriculum for college readiness workshops, Saturday Sessions and month long summer academic experience.
- Provides small group and individual academic advising related to college readiness.
- Arranges college tours and plans cultural and social enrichment activities.
- Works in partnership with Upward Bound staff and target high school personnel in planning and implementing a successful recruitment program.
- Travels to various target high schools and community centers in order to make presentations and talk with both students and parents about the benefits of the program.
- Interviews and assesses readiness for college prep and program fit of each applicant; selects students for participation in the Upward Bound program. When necessary, makes recommendations on student removal from the program.
- Selects, hires, trains, and supervises 20 academic tutors and student mentors. Develops and plans the curriculum for tutoring sessions and additional workshops offered during tutoring.
- Coordinates and plans the residential program for the Summer Academy.
- Selects, hires, trains, and supervises residential mentors who have responsibility for ensuring the safety of more than 50 high school students living in campus housing in the evening.
- Coordinates and implements preprofessional internship program. Includes selecting internship sites, developing work agreements with site supervisors, and placing students in internship sites.
- Develops learning outcomes associated with the development of workplace skills.
General Responsibilities
- Develops and implements programs and initiatives that offer support for students in crisis, facing adversity or challenges, or who belong to an under-represented or minority student population.
- Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting one-on-one to discuss support needs, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives.
- Places an emphasis on confidentiality of student concerns, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
- Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student support goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
- Projects outcomes for support services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student support initiatives against projected outcomes; may prepare reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
- May serve on committees and perform student support research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
- Plans and coordinates communications for student support initiatives to ensure student participation, inclusion, and engagement.

EDUCATION
Required- Bachelor's degree in education, public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, business, or related field
Preferred- Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field

Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
